Improv, short for improvisation, is a form of performance where the dialogue, action, and storyline are created spontaneously and collaboratively by the performers. It's often used in comedy, but can be applied to other genres as well. Here at Mesa High, we have multiple facets of our theatre club… one being IMPROV!
Here's a breakdown of key aspects of improv:
Core Principles:
Spontaneity: Improv is created in the moment, without a script or prior rehearsal.
Collaboration: Improv is a team effort, relying on performers listening and responding to each other.
"Yes, And...": This is a foundational rule in improv. Performers accept what their partner says and build upon it.
Active Listening: Improvisers must pay close attention to their scene partners, both verbally and nonverbally, to understand and react appropriately.
Acceptance: Embracing offers, even if they initially seem challenging or unexpected, is crucial for the flow of the scene.
Our Improv Troupe learns fun character games that require them to think on their feet. We also put on shows throughout the year to feature the talents we have acquired and entertain our community.
