Intermediate Acting Placement Requirements

Purpose of the Course

Intermediate Acting is for students who have successfully completed PA90: Theatre 1 and PA91: Theatre 2 (or equivalent experience) and are ready to deepen their work in scene study, character development, and emotional truth.  Provides an opportunity for all interested theatre students to advance their understanding of theatre and performance.  Students will be introduced to more advanced acting techniques and styles and be allowed to further advance their directing and technical skills.

Audition Components

1. Prepared Monologue (1–2 minutes)

  • Contemporary (written after 1950)

  • Memorized

  • Age-appropriate

  • Must demonstrate clear objective, obstacle, and tactics

  • No dialects unless authentically yours

2. Cold Read

  • Short scene provided at auditions

  • Evaluated on:

    • Listening skills

    • Responsiveness

    • Ability to make quick choices

    • Collaboration

3. Improvisation Exercise (Group)

  • Short ensemble-based improv

  • Assesses:

    • Risk-taking

    • Support of scene partners

    • Presence and focus

    • Willingness to commit

4. Written Reflection (submitted at audition)

  • What does discipline in rehearsal mean to you?
